The Lions Vision Research Laboratory of Oregon has conducted a wide range of cornea-, transplantation-, and eye bank-related research studies since it opened in 1987. Mark A. Terry, MD is the Scientific Director for the Vision Research Lab. Dr. Terry volunteers his time in this capacity as well as in his additional role of Medical Director for the Lions Eye Bank of Oregon.

The staff of the Lions Vision Research Laboratory routinely presents their research findings to other ophthalmic researchers at international scientific meetings such as ARVO (the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) and AAO (the American Academy of Ophthalmology). They also submit their results for publication in peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Development and introduction into clinical practice of the DLEK (deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty) procedure, a new method of corneal transplantation that was first performed in the U.S. by Dr. Terry.
  • Evaluation of methods for screening transplantable eye bank corneas for the presence of laser refractive surgery.
  • Development and feasibility studies of a foldable silicone artificial iris.
  • Measurement of the effects of corneal topography (curvature) on vision and how changes to the corneal topography can be used to correct visual impairments.
  • Evaluation of the efficacy of the Intrastromal Corneal Ring (or ICR, now called Intacs), a device for the treatment of nearsightedness and astigmatism.
  • Development of preservation media for storing transplantable corneas.

Click here to read letters sent to the Vision Research lab from surgeons who have come to the Lions Vision Research Lab to practice the DLEK procedure and then to watch Dr. Terry perform the surgery in patients.
