History/Purpose
Lions-Quest
is a K-12 character education/drug and alcohol
prevention program. This program is available
through Lions Clubs International Foundation
(LCIF), which makes grant money available to
sub-districts and multiple districts throughout
the world.
Incorporating risk, resiliency, and
asset-building research, Lions-Quest programs
engage families, schools, and community members
in working together to increase the protective
factors that promote young people’s healthy
development and reduce those factors that put
children at risk for problem behaviors. This
involves:
- Strengthening the bonds between youth
and their families, peers, school, and
community.
- Teaching the social competency skills
young people need for caring relationships,
positive commitments, and resistance
to negative pressures.
- Encouraging healthy aspirations and
achievement.
- Ensuring that all youth feel cared
for, valued, and supported.
- Providing meaningful opportunities
for youth participation and contribution,
including service learning.
- Setting clear, consistent expectations
for behaviors, and promoting a no-drug
use and no-violence philosophy throughout
a student’s
school experience.
Lions-Quest K-12 programs are
research based and comprehensive, with 60 studies
and evaluations supporting its approaches.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA) Model Programs initiative,
has designated Lions-Quest Skills
for Adolescence as one of only 44 (out
of 800) programs as a “Model Program”.
Based on a third-party objective review panel, Skills
for Adolescence has been recognized by
CSAP as not only being scientifically based
in its approach, but also has been proven effective
through a series of in-school evaluation studies.
In addition, the Lions-Quest K-12 programs
have been recognized by the Collaborative for
Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Skills
for Growing (K-5), Skills for Adolescence (6-8) and Skills
for Action (9-12) have all made the CASEL “Select” List.
It is our understanding that Lions-Quest was
the only program developer for whom all its
efforts received the highest CASEL rating.
How
to Access This Program
The Oregon
Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation functions
as a contractor for LCIF in sponsoring Lions-Quest
K-12 contract workshops. OLSHF works with Oregon ’s
school districts and invites teachers, counselors,
administrators and community members to participate
in 2-day in-service trainings. Classroom and
parent materials are purchased by the OLSHF
from Lions-Quest for classroom implementation
following the 2-day in-service trainings. The
OLSHF receives donations from Lions clubs,
corporations, charitable foundations and trusts.
Payments are issued to Lions-Quest upon receipt
of invoices for contract workshop fees, student
and parent materials, and other supplies needed
for successful Lions-Quest implementation with
fidelity.
