Making a Difference
for an Entire Family
Matching Youth Grant Program sends children to Gales Creek Summer Camp for Diabetic Children

It was a family affair at District E. Mom, Sue Cronin spoke first during the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation Luncheon, and then one by one, each of her children, son Shaun, and daughters Christine and Sarah, each explained how incredibly thankful they were to have been recipients of kindness by their local Lions Club.

Tapping the resources of the OLSHF's Matching Youth Grant Program, the Medford Crater Lions Club has helped Shaun and Sarah Cottle over the past few years attend Gales Creek Summer Camp for diabetic children.

“The lifelong impact of the education they received and the friends they made is invaluable,” commented Sue to the Lions. “I can’t thank the Foundation and the Lions Club enough for what you’ve done for our entire family. You don’t know what it’s like to let your diabetic child go, wondering if someone will guide them through the critical day to day steps that are necessary for their survival. The professionals at Gales Creek understand because they’ve all been through it themselves. They teach our children the importance of health issues, and along with peers of their own age, they learn that they are not alone with this disease. We would not have been able to afford to send Shaun and Sarah to this camp without the support of the OLSHF Matching Youth Grant Program.

And then, one after another, Shaun, and then Christine told of their camp experiences and what a difference it made in their young lives. But it was the youngest, Sarah, that brought tears to their dad and many in the audience. Sarah spoke softly, yet eloquently about what attending the camp had meant for her.

“I found friends who were the same as me. I had
kids my own age that I could talk to about embarassing things about being diabetic. Thank you Lions!”
