Patient Care Program

The Patient Care Program was created more than 30 years ago to help financially needy Oregonians receive the eye and ear surgery they need but cannot afford. Qualified applicants receive quality medical treatment with dignity, confidentiality and compassion.

The Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation's Board of Trustees allocates funds each year for this program. The Patient Care Committee meets on the first Thursday of every month to review applicants referred to the program through Lions clubs across the state.

Each case is thoroughly examined and weighed against established qualifications and guidelines. Every year, the Committee is able to help an average of 50 people from all parts of the state and from all age groups. Our Committee works hard to make the best use of its funds.

Thanks to the generosity of doctors and hospitals across the state, we usually pay around 1/3 the total regular cost for each procedure we sponsor. This allows us to help more people each year. In most cases, when the Committee sponsors an individual for treatment, they sponsor the individual outright. The patient is not responsible for any of the cost of the procedure.

SERVICES PROVIDED

The following are procedures that the Patient Care program may be able to assist with:

VISION HEARING
Cataract Surgery Adenoidectomy
Cornea Transplant Tympanoplasty
Enucleation Vitrectomy
Eye Muscle Surgery Mastoidectomy
Trabeculectomy (glaucoma) Myringotomy
Pterygium Surgery Nasal Septoplasty
Retinal Detachment Surgery Specialized Audio Testing
Specialized Vision Testing Tonsillectomy
Treatment of Macular Degeneration

The Patient Care Program does not consider applications for assistance with eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids or assistive devices. Those are considered individual Lions club projects. The program will consider providing assistance for other sight & hearing conditions on a case by case basis.

The applicant must qualify for assistance under the Lions Patient Care Guidelines specified by the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation's Board of Trustees.

To qualify, a client must:

  1. Be a resident of the State of Oregon for at least 2 years.
  2. Be sponsored by his or her local Lions, Lioness, Leo or Lions Auxiliary Club.
  3. Be truly needy. The financial guidelines of the Lions Patient Care Program are set at 150% of the Federal Poverty Level
  4. Be without other resources to pay for treatment. This includes private insurance, Medicare, and the Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid).
  5. It should be noted that the Lions Foundation is considered a "court of last resort." All other possible resources should be exhausted before the Lion's Patient Care Program is accessed.
